The Project
At the heart of this initiative lies Contromano, a diary that will meticulously document the journey towards obtaining a special A license, thereby enabling a functionally disabled individual like myself to ride an adapted motorcycle. The aim is to assist others in similar circumstances in navigating the same path more easily without getting overwhelmed by numerous information sources, and enabling them to more easily identify the relevant authorities that handle bureaucratic procedures, as well as those companies that specialise in adaptations for disabled individuals, among other tasks. Essentially, beyond being a personal endeavour, it is also a journey to be shared.
Reasons to Contribute
There are moments in life when time, once thought to be an unlimited resource, contracts. Thus, one realises that projects, dreams and desires cannot be shelved, waiting for the right moment or the most opportune time, as perhaps that moment depends solely on oneself; it must be created rather than passively awaiting some cosmic alignment or twist of fate. This is the essence of seeking the assistance and solidarity of those who believe that Contromano is a worthy project. With numerous tasks at hand and limited resources, even if only one person decides to embark on a similar journey using this experience, Contromano will not have been in vain.
The Travelogue
Contromano, initially conceived as a journey towards a destination, will culminate in a real voyage. It will tell the tale of a father and his twenty-year-old daughter who came into the world at a time when they could no longer share the exhilaration of a motorcycle ride together. Two generations, two voices. It will be a more of a narrated journey than a simple description of events, a narrative tour of Sicily that will also be visually captured. Why Sicily? Because Sicily embodies a paradigm where modernity and tradition converge and sometimes collide. An island that simultaneously serves as both the center and periphery of the Mediterranean, where contradictions thrive, and time possesses a distinct and unique quality. The narrative will not only explore places but also delve into the lives of its inhabitants; indeed, the fusion of territory and people will form its backbone. Sicily is unparalleled, the sole location in the Mediterranean where the environment assumes a distinctly human dimension, shaped by centuries of settlement by diverse cultures. And naturally, it will be a motorcycle journey, because the motorcycle offers an ideal mode of transport. Its engine roar harmonises with nature. A motorcycle takes its own time, where scents matter, and the journey itself takes precedence over the destination. The text will be presented in both Italian and English, with the volume also featuring an online supplement comprising itineraries, maps, plans, and useful travel information.
